Community Life

“My GPS journey that started in 2009 has uplifted and nurtured the life of my family members. Thank you GPS!”

- Dhanam, GPS staff and mother of three GPS students

The community story begins in the late 1990s, when a group of people living below the poverty level in Coimbatore city were displaced to an abandoned army barracks on the skirts of Chettipalayam. The conditions were extremely taxing on community members—there was no running water, no electricity and no roads.

With the opening of GPS in 2009, life in the community has transformed, as people have been able to organize around their children and the school.

Increasing availability of employment, education, healthcare and other support has given families the opportunity to save and invest in their homes and nurture the community over time.
